A US Senate investigation uncovered evidence that federal health officials deliberately suppressed COVID vaccine safety data that flagged serious adverse events including cardiac deaths, strokes, and Bell’s palsy. Senator Ron Johnson says officials didn’t ignore warning signs—they actively buried them to avoid fueling vaccine hesitancy.
FDA Silenced Internal Whistleblower
Dr. Ana Szarfman, an FDA safety data expert, warned in March 2021 that the agency’s monitoring system was hiding vaccine safety signals through a flaw called masking. She proposed a corrected method that detected 49 examples of extreme masking involving serious adverse events like sudden cardiac death, pulmonary infarction, and cerebral artery occlusion. FDA leadership ordered her to stop her analysis and focus on assigned work instead.
By September 2021, Dr. Peter Marks, the FDA’s top vaccine official, directed Dr. Szarfman to cease all COVID vaccine data mining. Internal emails reveal Marks complained her work had become a major distraction that could create conflicts feeding into anti-vaccination rhetoric. The Senate investigation obtained documents showing officials prioritized messaging over safety monitoring during the critical early rollout period.
VAERS Data Shows Alarming Pattern
The Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System recorded more adverse events and deaths following COVID vaccines than all other vaccines combined over the system’s 30-year history. COVID vaccines proved 55 times more deadly than flu vaccines, with 25.5 deaths per million doses compared to 0.46 for influenza shots. Despite this unprecedented safety signal, federal health agencies continued recommending the vaccines without additional warnings or investigations into the masked adverse events Dr. Szarfman identified.
What This Means
The Senate subcommittee findings suggest a systematic failure to prioritize public safety over public relations concerns. Health officials possessed tools to detect serious safety signals but chose not to deploy them when an internal expert raised concerns. This decision left Americans unaware of potential risks during the largest vaccination campaign in US history. Senator Johnson has called for accountability measures and reforms to prevent similar suppression of safety data in future public health emergencies.
